Experience a memorable getaway with us at Foxton Locks, one of Britain’s most iconic canal landmarks, from 27th to 31st August. This rally promises a blend of scenic beauty, history, and community spirit, perfect for families, couples, and solo travellers alike.

Location

Foxton Locks is situated near Market Harborough in Leicestershire, famed for its impressive flight of ten canal locks and picturesque surroundings. The area boasts walking trails, heritage sites, and opportunities for boating adventures.

Why Visit Foxton Locks?

Foxton Locks offers an authentic taste of Britain’s canal heritage. Whether you’re interested in history, nature, or simply relaxing by the water, this rally is a brilliant opportunity to connect with fellow members and enjoy summer in a quintessentially British setting.

Explore the locks, see Britain's longest staircase flight of locks and the remains of the unique inclined boat lift. Foxton Canal Museum is where you can learn about the area’s canal history. This is in the former Boiler house, where you will be provided an insight into the locks and the unique Plane boat lift.

There are boat trips where you can book a guided trip which is 30 minutes long or you can also hire a day boat to explore the area (this is seasonal). There is 34 acres of green space where it is ideal to spot wildlife like herons and king fishers.

There is also two pubs Bridge 61: A popular pub at the bottom of the locks with a large beer garden and summer BBQ. Foxton Locks Inn: which is located at the bottom of the locks, offering meals and a conservatory. Then there is a café Top Lock Cottage Café: which is located at the top of the locks, serving drinks, snacks, and locally produced ice cream.

There are family activities that often host free summer event, including pond dipping, story telling and traditional canal art workshop. There are also special themed activities such as guided walks and in the summertime paddleboarding or canoeing sessions are available.

Foxton Locks comprise ten canal locks arranged in two staircases of five locks each, located on the Leicester line of the Grand Union Canal, approximately 3 miles west of the Leicestershire town of Market Harborough. The locks are named after the nearby village of Foxton.

Next to the locks is the site of the Foxton Inclined Plane, built in 1900 to address operational constraints associated with the lock flight. The inclined plane was in use for ten years before being dismantled in 1926. A restoration project commenced in the 2000s, as the locks continue to present a bottleneck for boat traffic.

Staircase locks are used where a canal must ascend a steep gradient, forming a series of locks in which the bottom gates of one lock serve as the top gates of the next. Foxton Locks comprise the largest set of such staircase locks on the English canal system. The locks are equipped with side pounds; white paddles allow water transfer from a lock into a side pound, while red paddles move water from the pound to the next downstream lock.

A country park has been established at the top of the flight. At the bottom, near the junction with the Market Harborough arm, there are two public houses, a shop, a trip boat, and various other amenities.

The Foxton Canal Museum, situated in the former boiler house for the inclined plane’s steam engine, provides information about the history of the locks, the inclined plane, canal workers, and local canal-related topics.

Directions: The site is located off Gumley Road opposite the Foxton Locks long stay car park
